Don’t put the important stuff off!

For several months I’ve been meaning to write a woman who lives in my hometown of Waldport, Oregon. She was an older woman, with a husky voice, a great sense of humor, a bit of that East Coast attitude (even though she lived in my small West Coast town). I bagged her groceries at Clark’s Market while attending Waldport High School. When she found out I wanted to make movies for a living, she brought me in an old 8mm camera that still worked. Unfortunately, they had stopped making/processing 8mm film at the time (this was the film film that was before Super8, not the tape stuff from the 90s) – but it was the thought that counted.
When I graduated high school, she gave me a card, and enclosed a ten dollar bill in it, with a picture of me glued to the center. The bill read “In Justin we trust.”
She knew how to appeal to my ego.
Ten years go by. I now live in Portland, editing for Wieden+Kennedy, still working towards making movies etc. I come across the bill. She pops into my mind. I think ‘I should writer her a letter and give her a little update about things, she’d love that.’ I ask Chuck who runs the videostore in Waldport and also paints these amazing child-like images of dogs, cats, plants and other oddities, if she is still around. He says yes.
More time passes. I keep thinking I need to write the letter. Tonight I finally do…I type it up on my computer here at work. I open up Safari, and google her name to get her mailing address…and what comes up? A very recent obitiuarie. Agnes passed away on 6/13/09.
Damn.
Don’t put the important stuff off!

Tags: Michael Jackson
One of my first cassette tapes was Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall. Later Dangerous would be my first compact disc – and the sound quality with headphones on, blew me away. There’s an intro track before Black or White where you hear knocking, and the CD sounded so clear, I thought my dad was knocking on the door to my room.
But this isn’t about sound effects.
This is about Michael Jackson.
I remember watching a TV movie about his life as a kid and thinking that he had it hard – no kid should be pushed into showbiz. A kid should get to be a kid.
Today, hearing that he died, reminds me a bit of Ike Turner’s death. Mixed feelings. You respect the music they made, while not approving of the actions and mistakes made in their personal lives.
Perhaps people put up on a pedestal – presidents, popstars, saints, policitians fail, so we learn not to treat them as heros, when they are just people.
That’s not to justify any of Jackson’s actions*
But I can certainly appreciate the amazing pop music he leaves behind – and that still to this day, can lighten up a dancefloor.
MJ – rest in peace!
*though there is always the possibility that Jackson was more of an asexual person, his growth stunted emotionally, so as to be a naive adult kid. i am opposed to the idea that michael jackson could be innocent of the sex abuse he was accused of.

It’s my birthday today.
An email was sent to the employees of Wieden+Kennedy in Portland. We have a large piano in our atrium here. Wouldn’t it be great, if I went out into the atrium this morning and busted out a cover of Against All Odds? Like…it was the one chance I had to shine. Funny.
I recently canceled cable
June 16, 2009 at 7:02 pm | In News | 2 CommentsI got tired of giving what seemed like hundreds of dollars to Comcast in return for bland entertainment. Sure it was nice to relax to a rerun of Everyone Loves Raymond after work, spend a Sunday evening in reality television land, or flick on CNN to see a live speech…but there seems to be better ways to spend my time and money.
Here is an interesting article from Ralph Nader on the subject.
If you cancel your cable leave a comment here on the page -
cheers

I like these photographers for different reasons. Ray Gordon will make your ass look great, Chris Hornbecker will spend all day for a single perfect shot, Shayla Hason’s photos have soul, Jennifer Parsons does great portraits, and Tatum Shaw is one to watch. You can check out their work below:
